Napster
is a search engine that allows you to find and download
MP3 audio files. It eliminates the problems of
conventional FTP transfers by using cutting-edge
technology to ensure the completion of each MP3 download.
When searching online for songs, you can specify the
minimum server ping (response) times as well as MP3 bit
rates and frequency.
Napster essentially provides a virtual community of MP3
fans, in that each Napster user "shares" his or
her MP3 collection with everyone else running Napster,
ensuring a vast collection of MP3s for download. All
results are verified to allow you to find the fastest
server, and all searches are in real time, so the list of
available songs you receive is consistently reliable. The
program also features Automatic Hash Resuming, which lets
Napster find the next-fastest server that has the same
song and automatically complete the download if you
should lose your connection. The easy-to-use Napster
interface features its own chat system that allows users
to chat with each other in a number of different forums
based on music genre. Also included with Napster is an
internal MP3 player, although you can choose to specify
an external MP3 player. Its hot list feature helps you
keep track of your favorite MP3 libraries by notifying

you"), the popular instant messaging program that
lets you communicate with friends and colleagues in real
time. To seek out a friend on the ICQ network, simply
enter his or her ICQ number, name, nickname, or email
address. Once your contact list is set up, you'll be
notified when your friends are online so that you can
chat; send instant messages, files, and URLs; play games;
or just hang out.

functionality with an intuitive interface (see screen
shot). It has a full-featured playlist editor and a
ten-band graphic equalizer with user-definable presets
that can automatically load specific files. It also
features Windows Media Technology 4.0 input/output
support and the industry-standard Fraunhofer MP3 decoder.

Plus allows you to change the appearance of ICQ. When
installed, ICQ Plus integrates with ICQ by adding a menu
item to the main menu and a button to the title bar.
Choosing the new menu item brings up a dialog that lets
you configure ICQ's appearance in several ways. You can
apply a predefined skin or create one yourself. You can
change the background images, styles, and settings of
dialog boxes (BMP, JPEG, and GIF images are supported),
change the main menu image, set your own animated GIF or
AVI file instead of standard ICQ animation, and change
the style of buttons and other controls (see screen
shot). Skin files can be imported and exported via ZIP
files. ICQ Plus also has multiuser support. ICQ Plus
features an advanced layout mode that lets you use
multiple images as a background, ICQ for Groupware
support, random skin options, the ability to use a custom
animation for the ICQ button in the main dialog, support
of transparency in animated GIF images, the ability to
customize scroll bars in the main dialog, and MouseOver
support for buttons. This version includes ICQ2000a
support.Adding a bit of personality to a program is
always nice, and ICQ Plus has plenty of great ways to do

customization options alone make this program worth a

possible connection. Multiple FTP search engines are
included for finding files and mirror sites. GoZilla also

upload, directory compare, remote site editing, queued
uploading and downloading, complete directory overwrite
and delete, and a progress rate display. CuteFTP also

from hackers. This program includes four interlocking
security services: a firewall, an Application Control, an
Internet Lock, and Zones. The firewall controls the door
to your computer and allows only traffic that you
understand and initiate. The Application Control allows
you to decide which applications can and cannot use the
Internet. The Internet Lock blocks Internet traffic while
your computer is unattended or while you are not using
the Internet, and it can be activated automatically with
your computer's screensaver or after a set period of
inactivity. Zones monitor all activity on your computer
and alert you when a new application attempts to access
